Grand Admiral Thrawn was first introduced in Star Wars Legends in Star Wars: Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn, and wouldn’t be introduced into the main series canon until Star Wars: Rebels. Now, Thrawn is making his live-action debut in the Disney+ series, Ahsoka, which will place him in the exact same position he was in upon his original debut as the Heir to the Empire.
Thrawn Knows When To Retreat, Darth Vader Does Not In Star Wars: Darth Vader #37 by Greg Pak and Raffaele Ienco, Darth Vader and his small army of reprogrammed droids are sent to secure the ship The Executor, as it’s been compromised after every droid on the ship got overtaken by the Scourge. Thrawn knows this, and implements it on a regular basis, while Darth Vader outright refuses to do so, which is why Thrawn is unarguably smarter than Darth Vader in Star Wars canon.
