We left a VinFast EV customer drive experience in California with more questions than answers.

. Founded in 2017 to make scooters, buses, and cars, VinFast's first internal combustion-powered vehicles hit Vietnamese streets just two short years later. In 2021, amidst a conversion from combustion to electrification, it set its sights across the Pacific, with the goal of launching the brandby the end of 2022.

Ours was the affable retired NASCAR vet Jerry Nadeau, who put us in the driver's seat, strapped himself into the passenger seat, and had us stage on the short parking lot cone course. After a brief overview of some of the controls—such as the Rivian-like way you adjust the steering wheel and mirrors via the infotainment system and steering wheel buttons—we set off for two quick laps, followed by one with Nadeau behind the wheel.

Although most VinFast drivers will rely primarily on regenerative braking by taking their foot off the throttle, the brake pedal itself is a bit soft though stopping power felt adequate. The VF 8's steering is light and overly boosted, with a very slow steering ratio not unlike something you might find in an older Jeep Wrangler.

The rep also broke down pricing for us, saying that the VF 8 City Edition would start at $42,200, the VF 8 Eco at $55,000, and VF 8 Plus at $57,000, all without the battery pack. Consumers, he said, would then add a flat monthly fee of $169 per month for an unlimited mile lease of the VF 8's battery from Vin Fast, or, he said, simply tack on $20,000 to the MSRP if you'd like to buy your VF 8's battery outright.

The $42,200 figure quoted to us at the event, according to VinFast, is actually the base price for customers who opt to lease their batteries for the $169 per month rate. The manufacturer says it does not currently have a"published" battery price, though by simple math it appears that VinFast customers can expect to pay about $13,000 to own their VF 8's battery.
