UPDATE: A man and woman were killed early this morning on southbound Highway 17 in Campbell after they exited their stalled vehicle, and they were struck by an approaching vehicle.
The multi-vehicle crash occurred at about 4:10 a.m. just north of Hamilton Avenue, the CHP said. A man died at the scene, and a woman died later at a hospital.
The investigation revealed that a Mercedes stalled in one of the southbound lanes of Highway 17, just north of Hamilton Avenue, and the man and woman were standing near the vehicle when an approaching vehicle swerved to avoid the Mercedes and struck both people, the CHP said. It was not immediately clear what caused the Mercedes to stall or why the pair were standing in the line of traffic.A Sig-alert was issued at 4:29 a.m. for the blocked lanes, but one lane reopened by 4:51 a.m., and all lanes were cleared just before 7 a.m., the CHP said.
