The Michigan company blazes new tech trails with its first electric last-mile delivery van (or tiny house).
More than half of all Class 3 through 5 square-bodied, riveted walk-in vans on the road were built by Spartan Motors and its successor company, the Shyft Group, often badged as Utilimaster. When Shyft decided it was time to shift to electric power, it mounted a search for the ideal E-chassis to bear its bodywork. But no company had an offering that promised the capacity, the frame-rail spacing to accommodate existing battery packs, and the established reputation they required.
Rather than mounting with its shaft where the driveshaft would have entered, the motor is mounted parallel to the axle, so it drives the axle ring gear directly via a double-reduction helical gear train. Eliminating the hypoid gear required to turn the power 90 degrees boosts efficiency by 3 to 4 percent.
The Blue Arc's leaf isn't bent in a simple parabolic arc. Rather, the rear mounting end bends dramatically down almost 90 degrees to the mounting eye. The cross section of the leaf also varies—it's thickest where the axle mounts, thinning toward the chassis-mounting ends. Without a shackle the over-constraint causes the spring steel to bend near that 90-degree turn, increasing the rate as it does. The result is a constant ride rate as the load varies.
