The Coast Guard has helicopters, small boats and a patrol cutter in the area for a search-and-rescue operation.
A fire that raged through a boat carrying recreational scuba divers near an island off the Southern California coast early Monday has killed 25 people with nine more still unaccounted for, according to the most recent update from the Coast Guard.
Four initial bodies plucked from the ocean about 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles all had injuries consistent with drowning, said Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Kroll. The fire broke out aboard the vessel Conception around 3 a.m. off Santa Cruz Island, part of a chain of rugged wind-swept isles that form Channel Islands National Park in the Pacific Ocean west of Los Angeles.
The Conception, based in Santa Barbara Harbor on the mainland, was on the final day of a Labor Day weekend cruise to the Channel Islands when the fire erupted. Records show all safety violations from the last five years were quickly addressed by the boat's owners.
