Michigan officials said they believe they've found the mother of the infant that was discarded in 1997.
HUDSON TOWNSHIP, MI — A quarter-century-old mystery surrounding the identity and cause of death of a baby girl known for decades simply as “Baby Garnet” may have come to a close in this Upper Peninsula community.
The cold case began to thaw in 2017, when investigators first sent DNA samples of Baby Garnet for forensic genetic genealogy testing, officials said in a statement Wednesday, July 13. Working with a genealogist, the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Department and state police investigators identified Baby Garnet’s family blood line and, eventually, her likely mother.
The woman gave investigators information “that provided probable cause to arrest her on the charge of homicide-open murder,” Mackinac County Sheriff Edward M. Wilk said in the statement.The statement did not include the identity of the woman. It remains unclear if Baby Garnet had a name. Back then, an autopsy in Grand Rapids provided some information. Forensics tests showed the infant had gestated for between 38 and 40 weeks. Full-term gestation is 40 weeks.
