3.1 earthquake near Ocotillo Wells lightly shakes parts of San Diego County [Breaking]
A magnitude 3.1 earthquake occurred at 4:10 p.m. on Thursday roughly 11 miles southeast of Ocotillo Wells, producing shaking noticeable in parts of San Diego County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The temblor began 5.7 miles beneath the Earth’s surface, on or near the Elsinore fault zone, one of the most seismically active systems in Southern California. Small quakes of this kind are common in California. They rarely signal the onset of a major quake, like the 6.0 temblor that the Elsinore system produced in 1910. That quake shook most of Southern California.
