Where the Aztecs stand in the Mountain West race with four games to go, the record low metrics and Nathan Mensah's uncanny ability to guard guards
The Aztecs nearly got a break in the Mountain West Conference race just as they were tipping off at the Save Mart Center. Boise State missed a free throw up two at Colorado State, and referees swallowed their whistles on John Tonje’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer that may or may not have involved contact on his wrist.
Logic suggests that winning Wednesday night, as ugly as it was, might have ensure at least a share of the title for the Aztecs, who can do no worse than 14-4 if they sweep their home games, as they should. That would require Boise State and Nevada to run the table to pass them. Or put another way: The Aztecs were 1-20 and had lost 11 straight when their offensive efficiency rating is under 80.
They talk about it all the time at SDSU, winning with their defense on those nights when their shots aren’t falling. And it indeed happens, just never before to this extreme. Baker dribbled once, twice, then fired a 3-pointer over Mensah’s outstretched arm that was short. Mensah even grabbed that rebound, too.
