is a 35th-generation New Mexican from a military family. She attended over a dozen schools growing up as a result. Haaland was also a single mother and struggled early on, depending on food stamps and living paycheck to paycheck. Eventually, she was able to put herself through college, earning degrees from the University of New Mexico and UNM Law School. She is still paying off her student loans.
Haaland worked as a Tribal administrator, a local service provider for adults with developmental disabilities, in the small business sector and in Tribal gaming before pursuing politics. After her successful run for New Mexico Lieutenant Governor in 2014, she became the first Native American woman to be elected to lead a state party. It was during this time that she
to support the Tribe when they decided to fight the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline through their Treaty lands.
