65 People Die in Confirmed Ebola Outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo's Ituri Province

The outbreak in Ituri province, in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, has resulted in the deaths of at least 65 people. Additionally, there have been 246 suspected cases reported.

At least 65 people have died in a confirmed Ebola outbreak in Ituri province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with 246 suspected cases reported so far.

Africa CDC is concerned about the risk of further spread due to the urban context of Bunia and Rwampara and intense population movement related to mining in the affected areas. A different variant of the virus was identified, which will complicate the response.

Uganda's health ministry said a Congolese man had died in Kampala of Ebola Bundibugyo, imported from Congo. Recent clashes between rival militia groups in Ituri have resulted in the deaths of many civilians. Hygiene conditions in displacement sites in Kasai province were described as catastrophic by Medecins Sans Frontieres. Out of a total of 64 cases, 45 died and 19 others recovered in Kasai province.

It is transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected persons, contaminated materials or persons who have died from the disease. The Africa CDC was convening an urgent meeting with said initial findings suggested the presence of a non-Zaire strain of the virus
