We respect those who publish photos of their children, parents and spouses in our death notices, people who might be offended to see the whiskers of pets juxtaposed with the photos of their loved ones.
We understand the grief people feel when they lose beloved pets. My wife and I were bereft at the thought of losing our 10-year-old Ella until she had surgery to save her a few weeks ago. But we respect people who use our death notices for mourning and might be offended to see adjacent pet obituaries. We published an obituary of a 3-year-old rabbit named Pearl Grover in The Plain Dealer death notices Saturday, and readers took notice.
We publish a lot of content on a lot of platforms every day, so mistakes are inevitable. I’ve found that most of you will forgive us when we make one like this, but you’re not so forgiving if we repeat the mistake. We will do the same here. We will put up guardrails to ensure animal obituaries do not get mixed in with our death notices. One of the issues we’ve already identified is that when pages come to our designers for review each night, the pages don’t show the death notices. The designers could be a backstop if they could see the content.
