Canadian pro cyclist rusty_woods, who ran a sub-four-minute mile as a teenager, sets us straight on the similarities between running and cycling. TDF2019
There are skills that I learned racing the 1500 meters that I still apply today, like making really important decisions under physical suffering. In the 1500 meters at a high-level championship meet, you really have to keep your head and be smart while also just suffering and being right on the limit. That’s certainly similar to any type of mountaintop finish, any type of climb.
Say you’re doing a 200K stage and you have to do a climb 140 kilometers in at full effort. The runner in me would think, “Oh man, I can’t continue this pace.” But as a cyclist, you realize that you don’t have to continue that pace. Because you get a descent, you recover, you come back. In cycling, it’s all about going over your red line multiple times in a race and dealing with that mentally.
I fell in love with running early. I was a competitive runner all through my teens. Because of that, I really developed, I think, just a natural ability to produce really high power in a running position. As opposed to a lot of my pro cycling [peers], they’re used to being bent over a bike. That’s why at time trials, when you’re really bent over on the bike, I’m not as good.
