, Ismail said he was questioned alongside several international students, though he says he was held the longest. He alleged that he was asked about his religion and religious practices in Lebanon before an officer asked him to unlock his phone and laptop for an hours-long search.

“After the 5 hours ended, she called me into a room, and she started screaming at me. She said that she found people posting political points of view that oppose the US on my friend[s] list,” Ismail said in his written statement. “I responded that I have no business with such posts and that I didn’t like, [s]hare or comment on them and told her that I shouldn’t be held responsible for what others post,” he said.

Ismail said that the officer then canceled his visa and told him he’d be sent home. Ismail is currently working with the nonprofit who granted him a scholarship to study in the U.S.,reported. Harvard is also “working closely with the student’s family and appropriate authorities to resolve this matter,”
