Charles III felt the weight of history as he addressed MPs for the first time as King. It is quite a weight for a King called Charles.
It was, said King Charles III, standing in the vast and ancient Westminster Hall, impossible not to feel the “weight of history which surrounds us”.
His response was his first speech as King to those who run the country, and he took care to assure the massed parliamentarians that though he was sovereign, he had the greatest regard for their roles. Quoting Shakespeare’s Henry VIII in reference to Elizabeth I, Charles said Queen Elizabeth II had been “a pattern to all princes living”.
“This vow she kept with unsurpassed devotion. She set an example of selfless duty which, with God’s help and your counsel, I am resolved faithfully to follow.”
