Such thinking has bred what Brooks calls a “warrior” ethos. Us versus them. Winner takes all. Since we have been living with this tribal mindset for some time now, the “Mr. President” ad strikes a resonant chord. Printed five years ago we might have shrugged. Today we sit up and take notice because we realize what we have lost.
And isn’t that truly what makes us Americans? Given that we are a nation of immigrants, mixed with races of every nation, we are not defined by ethnography but rather by our values. There will be elected officials who seek to divide us, but if we hold to our sense of becoming we can begin anew.
