The upcoming season ofBachelor in Paradise will feature the popular franchise's first same-sex relationship. “Spoiler alert: I’m a queer queen,” contestant Demi Burnett wrote on Twitter after the show's teaser dropped, sparking surprise and delight from queer fans.
, have always required a great deal of buy-in to what is ultimately an idealized fantasy of straightness, romance and togetherness — not only from contestants, but from viewers as well. The series is shot in gauzey-dreamy light, something like the rose-colored glasses the contestants are asked to put on as they “forsake all others” for a tear-soaked chance at love . and sweeping panoramas of icy northern landscapes, mountain ranges and balmy tropical beaches.
Still, many of us find a secret kind of pleasure in the rose-strewn genre where anything goes, as long as it follows the script or deviates from it only slightly. It’ll be interesting to see how a queer relationship plays out in this playground of conventionality and pie-in-the-sky dreams — some of which do come true!
