A majority of Americans prefer electing the president by national, popular vote over the Electoral College, according to several recent polls. But two of the current Democratic presidential candidates think the Electoral College should stay.
Opponents of the Electoral College argue that the president should be elected by the majority of voters, not by who wins the majority of electoral votes. The refrain often heard on the campaign trail sounds like this from Sen. Elizabeth Warren: “Every vote matters,” she said during a CNN town hall in March.
Critics say the Electoral College disadvantages cities while inflating the importance of rural areas. They also argue the system forces presidential candidates to focus disproportionately on “swing states,” like Florida or Pennsylvania, while ignoring the rest of the country that traditionally votes for one party or the other.
But defenders of the Electoral College argue the opposite would happen: If the Electoral College were eliminated, it would unfairly advantage urban areas over rural communities.Several recent polls found that a majority of Americans prefer electing the president by national, popular vote over the Electoral College. In March, a POLITICO/Morning Consult poll showed that 34 percent still support the Electoral College, while 50 percent want to eliminate it. Sixteen percent had no opinion.
