OAKLAND — The suspected driver in a 2021 crash that killed a 60-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter, drunk driving, and leaving the scene of a wreck, court records show.
Erik Steverson, 32, of San Pablo, was charged in late July and entered a not guilty plea. His last court appearance, earlier this month, was to set a pretrial hearing in December, according to court records., an Emeryville resident, in the crash. Police allege that at about 1 a.m. on Sept. 6, 2021, Steverson was driving the wrong way near the Interstate 80 and Interstate 580 eastbound interchange, and collided with O’Brien’s car.
O’Brien died on the freeway. Police say Steverson was injured but was still able to run from the crash site. He was arrested a short distance away at a nearby pedestrian and bike path, court records show. Steverson was released on his own recognizance with a court order that he not drive a car while the case is pending. Police determined he’d been drinking at a downtown Oakland bar shortly before the crash, according to court records.
