Abbott Elementary creator and star, Quinta Brunson, recently unpacked the season 2 premiere's cameo of a Philadelphia icon. In Abbott Elementary season 2, the teachers back from summer break to begin their teacher development week. Janine struggles with her personal life following her season 1 break up with Tariq but finds solace in her work, scoring a win by managing to book the Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty to surprise her students on the first day of school.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY During a press panel , Brunson broke down the Gritty cameo, explaining how special the Flyers mascot is to the creative team. Born and raised in West Philadelphia, Brunson's knowledge of her home city and its culture exudes in the show. Although a relatively new mascot of the Flyers, debuting in 2018, Philadelphia residents widely supported the giant orange maniacal creature. Within days, Gritty's Twitter account amassed more followers than any other NHL mascot. Landing such a popular Philadelphia figure is a massive success for a series only starting their second season.
