The absence of fans helped save $1.8 billion, but the Tokyo Olympics were the most expensive on record

Event organizers said final cost data will not be available until spring 2022, after the restoration of the venues and finalization of all contracts. However, the pandemic causing the event's one-year delay also contributed to a rise in other costs, officials said. And $800 million in ticket sales was lost, which the Japanese government will have to make up for.
The study showed that the Tokyo Olympics' cost overrun was over 200%, and that was before another few billion dollars were added due to the event's delay.
