The California Republican's attacks on his opponent, Ammar Campa-Najjar, are nothing new, and Democrats are calling them 'bigoted' remarks.
Republican Congressman Duncan Hunter, the California lawmaker indicted last year on 60 counts by a federal grand jury for allegedly misusing $250,000 in campaign funds, is again issuing campaign attacks that are anti-Muslim and racist, Democrats allege.
“I think the more desperate he gets, the lower the attacks get, and the more erroneous the claims are,” Campa-Najjar told Newsweek by phone Friday evening. “This [campaign] email, he got my name wrong, and he accused my dad—who was 8 [years old] when Black September happened—of being the mastermind.”
“Congressman Hunter ran a bigoted and deeply offensive campaign against Ammar Campa-Najjar in 2018 when he narrowly won re-election while under indictment, and it appears he is picking up right where he left off," Congressman Adam Schiff told Newsweek in a statement. “I believe that Hunter’s racist line of attack against a fellow American is beneath the office that he holds,” Levin said in a statement. “There is no place in our political system or in our country for this type of rhetoric.”
