For most, the corner of Rustic Rock Drive and Spicewood Springs Road is a busy intersection in North Austin, but for Anna Bauereis, it’s where her life changed forever.
PUBLISHED 9:34 PM CDT Apr. 05, 2023AUSTIN, Texas — “It’s a little bit discouraging six years out, that people are still whizzing past,” Bauereis said.
At just 14 years old, her son, Alexei, a charismatic and accompanied dancer, was killed. In his honor, the mother of five and local business owner shares his story, advocating for traffic safety in a state that has seen a 34% pedestrian and 58% bicyclist fatality rate increase from 2017 to 2021. To combat the troubling number in traffic incidents, TxDOT launched the “Be Safe. Drive Smart” campaign aimed at increasing education and safety practices across Texas. The program uses human billboards, social media and other tools to share important guidelines.
