Will the rate hike affect how you cool your home this summer?
Home cooling prices are expected to rise on June 1, just as Columbus braces for a weekend with high temperatures in the 90s. AEP Ohio customers are dealing with some oppressive heat this week, and it's not even summer yet.AEP's nearly 30-percent rate hike takes effect Thursday, meaning an average utility bill of $155 will now become a $198 monthly expense. To add insult to injury, AEP, which reported a $2.6 billion profit last year, is expected to try to raise rates again next year.
High temperatures are expected to get into the 90s in Columbus this weekend. But some may be changing how they keep their homes comfortable with the rate hike. "I am not being dramatic when I say that this rate hike keeps me up at night because I’ve been barely able to make it each month," Kat Finneran said.
If you want to save energy and decrease your bill, AEP Ohio recommends increasing your thermostat by five degrees during the summer, covering your windows during the day with shades, using a ceiling fan that rotates counterclockwise, and avoiding the use of appliances that produce heat when it's hottest outside. Also, doing your laundry with cold water instead of hot water can save you money.
