“I heard the biggest, loudest boom,” said Angela Vacaro, 62, who has lived on the 100 block of Ann Street all her life. “It sounded like a bomb went off.” Another neighbor saw a person taken away in an ambulance. Emergency radio reports indicated two people were treated for serious burns.City fire Chief Henry Hennings was on the scene but about 5:30 a.m. was still compiling information and couldn’t say if anyone was hurt. He promised an update when firefighters were done with their work.

She recalled a gas explosion damaged a nearby home in the early 1970s. Natural gas only is piped down half the block; it doesn’t extend to her home across the street and it terminates near where the home burned early Saturday, she said.
