The Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority has earmarked $6.2 million for lawsuits and other work in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Via AlaskaBeacon

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge sprawls to the shoreline of the Beaufort Sea, seen here in 2006. Oil development has been proposed for the refuge’s coastal plain.

A director speaking in favor of the proposal said he believes the land was promised to the state at statehood, and “we should have access to this land and be able to start developing this area. And I think it’s an overreach of the Biden administration for them to block any of our development.” Through December, the corporation had spent $13.8 million in an attempt to claim leases within the refuge, and the amount approved this month is the remainder of $20 million set aside by AIDEA for the ANWR leasing project.

The federal government, following legislation orchestrated by U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, held an oil and gas lease sale for parts of the refuge during the last days of the Trump administration.
