The air quality index in the weather section on Apple products is likely gathered from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Quality Index , which can tell you how clean or polluted the air is in the U.S. The AQI system looks at five major air pollutants that are regulated by the Clean Air Act — namely, ground-level ozone, carbon monoxide, particle pollution , sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide — to calculate the air quality, which can range anywhere from zero to 500 .
