Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan said in a statement he has faith in the city and knows “we will lean into our partnerships and relationships through the uncertainty of the days ahead.”

“As we prepare for whatever is to come from the grand jury as it makes decisions in the officer involved shooting of Jayland Walker, we remain committed to listening to our residents and making space for their voices and concerns, while also prioritizing everyone’s safety,” he said. “At the beginning of this process, I asked our community to have patience with the investigation, and we are now getting very close to some answers.

Last week, Akron’s police chief, Steve Mylett, said the department will be prepared for any protests that occur. “If violence does erupt, officers will declare the assembly an unlawful assembly,” Mylett said. “That is something that we hope does not occur in the city in the coming days and weeks. If an unlawful assembly is declared by our officers, we will communicate information to the protest group and will provide opportunity, if time allows, on how people can leave the area safely.”Sgt. Michael Murphy Jr. is assigned as a point of contact for protest groups to gain information.
