A Lauderdale County man was sentenced to 70 years in federal prison Thursday for sexually exploiting an eight-year-old child. U.S. District Judge Madeline H. Haikala handed down the sentence to Michael Tays, 36, of Florence.

According to statements in open court, Tays sexually abused the child repeatedly and recorded it in photographs and videos.“There is no place in our communities for those who prey on vulnerable children,” U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona said. “This sentence effectively ensures that Tays will spend the rest of his life in prison. Through collaborative law enforcement efforts, we continue to investigate and prosecute those responsible for these horrific crimes.
