Alabama schools reported wanting to hire more than 1,500 teachers and other professionals among 27 subject areas.
But a vacancy as reported by a school district doesn’t necessarily mean there is no one teaching that class, Sibley continued.
While rural and urban areas are typically where teacher shortages have existed, the survey doesn’t reflect a clear pattern geographically. Five school districts did not submit any information for the survey. Only one of Alabama’s 10 public charter schools has information included in the survey. State education officials have intensified efforts to hone in on specific subject areas along with geographic regions where the need is greatest, including paying some subject area teachers higher pay.from a higher salary schedule than other subject area teachers.
