Here's what's been going on with R&B singer Wade Brown, a decade after 'American Idol' and 'The Voice.'

Brown, by then a University of Alabama in Huntsville student, became a favorite of Green’s, who dubbed him “soul brother number two,” a reference to one of legendary singer James Brown’s nicknames, soul brother number one. Alas, Brown was ousted from “The Voice” during the show’s “battle round.”

On a recent afternoon, I checked in with Brown to chat about his musical path so far and what’s next. Edited excerpts below.Man, that was definitely a great experience. It was an honor to open-up for Wale, real cool. The best memory about that was just walking out there and seeing the crowd, and gaining new fans. But whether I was opening for Wale or whether it was just another type of show, the thing that’s always the most exciting for me is gaining new fans.Yeah.

Everything from quartet gospel to funk to blues to soul to classic rock. So I heard everything from Al Green to Curtis Mayfield to Sam Cooke. Prince. D’Angelo. BeBe and CeCe Winans. The Mighty Clouds of Joy and The Soul Stirrers - those are two old school, gospel groups. K-Ci & JoJo. Funkadelic, which is my favorite band, all the way to the Allman Brothers and Journey.Yeah, I got my mom to thank for that.

Honestly, he’s really the only reason I tried out for “The Voice,” because I was a fan of his. He and D’Angelo started to influence me around the same time. Those two and Prince are three of my biggest influences. But when I finally got to meet him in person, he was really a cool guy. We didn’t get to like spend 24/7 with him, but the gems that he did drop were very valuable.
