Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez, 25th, opened a makeshift shelter in a vacant warehouse in Pilsen on Tuesday evening to house dozens of migrants without a place to sleep, as thousands of asylum-seekers have come to Chicago over the past three weeks.

Pilsen Food Pantry and other community organizations spent Tuesday evening preparing the empty building, shuttling people and coordinating meal efforts. Sigcho-Lopez said the community has been generous. Volunteers were able to set up the new shelter in a few hours. “My brother was shot in January,” said 45-year-old South Shore resident Carrie Patterson at the meeting Thursday. “Chicago already has a humanitarian crisis. We don’t have enough resources to support our people here.”Sigcho-Lopez said he hopes to set up more shelters and facilities in areas like Pilsen, where there is Spanish-language infrastructure and the community is not being forced to facilitate programs to accommodate new arrivals against their will.
