No more children are being housed at the Homestead detention center, the nation’s largest for unaccompanied minors, the Trump administration said Saturday

With the announcement, migrant children are no longer being housed in temporary influx shelters, which the Trump administration started using in 2018 amid a major surge in border crossings and its family separation policy. Two other temporary shelters – a former World War II Japanese internment camp near Lawton, Oklahoma, and a site in Carrizo Springs, Texas, which was occupied for only a month – were shuttered in July.

The influx shelters, which have laxer federal oversight than state-sponsored sites, came under fire from Democrats and immigration advocates because of crowded conditions. Democratic presidential candidates, whoon Homestead in June to draw attention to President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, likened it to a prison.

HHS spokesperson Evelyn Stauffer said the department’s need for emergency shelter space has waned as the number of children crossing the border has decreased and the agency more quickly unites children with sponsors. HHS said it would still maintain the Homestead site, which was set up during Obama administration in 2016, while cutting capacity by more than half to 1,200 beds.

HHS said that 14,300 kids had been housed at Homestead since it started using the facility in March 2018.
