Wildlife officials in Middlesex have been setting up humane traps to try to capture the carnivorous creature.

State Fish and Wildlife officials say they've received several reports since Friday of an alligator spotted in Ambrose Creek near Lincoln Boulevard in Middlesex.

The alligator is believed to about 5 to 7 feet long. Wildlife officers have been setting up humane traps to capture it."I hooked into something and then my line just shot out and then eventually I was pulling it for a minute, I thought it was a turtle, and then it came up and it was the alligator," Anthony Dimitrievski said.

"Do not approach this animal. It is a massive muscle. That's what it is with the mouth. It's carnivorous, so just stay away," Middlesex Mayor John Madden said. Possession of alligators or crocodiles is against the law in New Jersey. The mayor said some people illegally bring the wild animals from out of state and release them into the water when they can no longer care for them.
