Amazing! Ingenuity Helicopter Flies to the Perseverance Backshell and Parachute to See Them Close Up By Nancy_A
This image of Perseverance’s backshell , supersonic parachute , was collected from an altitude of 26 feet by NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter during its 26th flight on Mars on April 19, 2022.NASA said the backshell, the white, shattered flying-saucer looking piece of equipment, would have impacted the surface at about 126 kph/78 mph – which was the plan all along.
These items were essential to bring Perseverance safely to the surface, as part of the entry, descent, and landing on Mars – otherwise known as the 7 Minutes of Terror. During those seven minutes, the incoming spacecraft carrying the rover comes screaming into Mars atmosphere at nearly 20,000 kph experiencing extreme gravitational forces and high temperatures. Through atmospheric resistance , the heat shield-covered backshell slows the spacecraft to under 1,600 kph .
Those seven minutes are fast-paced and stressful, because it all has to happen automatically, with no input from engineers back on Earth.
