Cuyahoga Co. Common Pleas Judge Nancy Margaret Russo said she did not understand what led Menokka Karr Nealy to kill her daughter but urged the importance of asking for help when experiencing mental illness and taking care of children.

, 30, was initially charged with aggravated murder, felonious assault and child endangerment in the death of E’Nijah Holland.

While crying, Nealy apologized to her family and the Holland family. Gregory Holland was the child’s father, and he had been trying to gain custody of the child before her death. “There’s nothing I can do. There’s not a sentence I can give that can turn the clock back. We are here today because choices were made and now people in this room are suffering,” Russo said.“A mother is supposed to love and protect their child,” she said. “I pray her soul haunts you forever. I consider you a monster. I pray that your days in jail be worse than what my niece went through.”

Nealy was immediately arrested and admitted to investigators that she had stabbed her daughter, police said. “We loved her, and I know she loved us,” she said in an interview. “During her last visit, she just kept kissing me and kissing me and then she said, ‘Grandma, I wish you was my mother,’ and I said don’t say that. I’m Grandma, and I’ll always be here for you.”
