The American Baroque Opera Company and women of the Orpheus Chamber Singers perform Vivaldi's 'Juditha triumphans' at Oak Lawn Methodist Church in Dallas on Nov. 19, 2022. Soloist in foreground are Alissa Ruth Suver, Erin Roth Thomas, Dianna Grabowski and Jendi Tarde. The Dallas-based American Baroque Opera Company has been performing lesser known operas from the 17th and 18th centuries, with period instruments.
Vivaldi composed the oratorio for a Venetian home for orphaned and abandoned girls, where he worked in an elaborate program of musical training and performances. So all five solo roles and choruses of Assyrian soldiers and Israeli women are assigned to women’s voices. The Bethulians were the vocal standouts. Erin Roth Thomas gave Juditha great dignity and a gorgeous mezzo, finely finished and expressive. Soprano Alissa Ruth Suver portrayed Juditha’s handmaid Abra with a gleaming, substantive soprano. The Israeli priest Ozias has less to sing, but mezzo Audrey Welsh called on divine intervention with bold authority.
