Analysis: Are Americans as interested in impeachment as the media is?

By Philip Bump Philip Bump National correspondent focused largely on the numbers behind politics Email Bio Follow May 22 at 5:25 PM During his last-minute news conference in the Rose Garden on Wednesday, President Trump made passing reference to the “I-word,” the word that’s been rumbling around Washington frequently these days, the background noise to the city’s normal clamor.
The suggestion is that this is a subject that has captured the public imagination. The I-word, suddenly everywhere. But then we look at Google’s search data since the beginning of the year, and things look a bit different. Some polling seems to mirror this. CNN, for example, found that support for impeachment had declined by the end of 2018. Quinnipiac University polling released this month found a decline in support for impeachment, as well.
