Just as legislators should recuse themselves from matters in which they have a personal stake, this principle should also apply to the participation of Hughes and Angela Paxton in the impeachment trial. The trial will involve allegations of impropriety, special benefits and whether. It would be unfair to Hughes and Angela Paxton — and to the probity of the proceedings — to allow them to sit in judgment of Ken Paxton.
The attorney general had been at the center of several controversies since his election in 2014, including an indictment on securities fraud charges in mid-2015 that has yet to go to trial and allegations from former aides that he .
