“In the store, people ask, ‘Why are the shoes this price?’ But when they get the product in hand they’re surprised.”
Of the Decathlon gear I tested, the more basic the item, the more I liked them. Those $7 shorts did their job on hot summer runs as well as my $40 pairs. They’re not the most fashionable shorts in town, but then, I’m not a fashionable runner. I’m more picky about socks and was pleased with the get-out-of-the-way comfort provided by the pairs I tried, most of which cost less than $10.
I had less success with tops, owing more to fit than function. Decathlon currently uses European sizing for the running apparel on its U.S. site. At 5-foot-8 and 128 pounds, I found a men’s small in shirts to have more of a tight Under Armour/fit than I prefer except on the coldest days. Of course, you might like snug shirts. Technically, the tops I ran in were sound.
But what you’re probably really curious about are the shoes. Here, the difference between Decathlon’s products and what most of us are used to is greater. There are no space-age foams in Decathlon’s midsoles orin its uppers. The page for the $33.90 women’s shoe mentioned above touts “soft cushioning and the comfort of a sock liner” along with being “designed for women running for up to 1 hour on roads or a treadmill.
The word “adequate” came to mind when I wore Decathlon’s running shoes. For me, that word is fine in regard to clothing, but less so when it comes to shoes. What I most want from running shoes is to not notice them, regardless of their price; I was always aware that I was wearing Kalenjis instead of my usual brands.You probably have your own standards for deciding what shoe is right for you.
