At long last open for NHL business, Mullett Arena got its chance to shine as host of the Arizona Coyotes' home opener.
The Coyotes' game against the Winnipeg Jets — appropriately, given the fact that the original Jets moved from that Canadian city to the Phoenix metro area to become the Coyotes in 1996 — was broadcast nationally on ESPN Plus Hockey Night. Mullett Arena is small for sure, and hardly noticeable from the outside. It sits between covered parking at the corner of Packard Drive and Rio Salado Parkway and the grandstand of ASU's track facility, Sun Angel Stadium.
Around 4:45, delayed by late player arrival, the traditional players' red carpet walk took place out on the small plaza at the south end of the arena. Defenseman Josh Brown was first, announced by ESPN SportsCenter anchor Ashley Brewer, followed by 2021-22 All-Star Clayton Keller and forward Barrett Hayton.
