In conversation with Paris-based American artist JonOne who's celebrated for his canvases incorporating color splashes and drips, the obsessive repetition of his name and a free way of composing.
arrived in Paris in 1987 and soon settled into his atelier known as the Hôpital Éphémère, the abandoned Bretonneau Hospital in Paris transformed temporarily into artist workshops, exhibition spaces, rehearsal rooms and recording studios. Now with studios in Les Lilas in the Parisian suburbs and Roubaix in northern France, his latest solo show entitled

Courtesy of ADAGP, Paris, 2023 Presenting approximately 200 pieces, the exhibition showcases an entire corridor and pool-facing changing rooms filled with his pandemic drawings series from 2020 to 2023, his forays into the applied arts through collaborations with faience factory Gien, crystal manufacture Daum, fashion house Agnès b. and embroiderer Atelier Safrane Cortambert, and paintings from the 1990s to present-day.
Describe your current exhibition “La Tentation du Decor” at La Piscine showing off your projects in the applied arts. I’m lucky because there’s a part dedicated to my drawings, and that’s a lot of drawings because I draw a lot. That’s not all my drawings. I’ve done hundreds and thousands of them. Because Roubaix is known for its textile production, you can see things I’ve done with Agnès b. corresponding to textile and how I’ve been able to adapt my style to different objects.
