Houston Astros Kyle Tucker gets an ice bath from teammates after he hit an RBI single which scored the game wining run during the ninth inning of an MLB baseball game at Minute Maid Park on Thursday, May 5, 2022 in Houston.Yordan Alvarez refused to hide behind the excuses before him. The baseballs are dead, traveling less than last season or perhaps the year prior. Anticipation overtook Alvarez’s ability to think coherently in the moment, one he’s somehow yet to experience.
“I think I froze a little bit after I hit the ball,” Alvarez said through an interpreter. “I thought the ball was gone. Obviously, that doesn’t justify me not running.” Baker removed Alvarez from the game for pinch runner Chas McCormick — a sound baseball decision, not a disciplinary move. The precocious 24-year-old slugger found Baker in the dugout after he exited the game. According to Baker, Alvarez said he “messed up.”
