WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Astros reliever Phil Maton said he is fully recovered from the fractured right hand he sustained afterMaton said he expects a normal spring training and, if anything, “may be one bullpen session behind” his usual progression. Maton needed surgery to correct the fracture. The 29-year-old righthander is playing his final season before free agency.
Maton fractured his right pinkie finger after Houston’s final regular-season game, during which he gave up a single to his brother, Nick. The outing inflated Phil Maton’s ERA to 3.84 and, afterward, he punched a locker in frustration. At the time, Maton called his actions “selfish and shortsighted.”Maton missed Houston’s entire World Series run, but did accompany the team throughout its journey. He finished 2022 with a 1.24 WHIP and 3.84 ERA in 65 ⅔ innings.
