Chesapeake Police have confirmed seven fatalities, including the alleged shooter. Multiple people are believed to have been wounded and receiving medical attention.
At least seven people have been confirmed dead, including the alleged gunman, after a shooting at a Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia, on Tuesday night.
"Chesapeake Police confirm 7 fatalities, including the shooter, from last night’s shooting at Walmart on Sam’s Circle," the City of Chesapeake said in a tweet early Wednesday morning. Police were called to the Walmart shortly after 10 p.m., Chesapeake police spokesperson Leo Kosinski told reporters.Chesapeake Mayor Rick West posted a statement of condolences to the victims of the tragedy. “I am devastated by the senseless violence that took place last night in our city. My prayers are with all those affected — the victims, their family, their friends, and their coworkers,” West said. “I am grateful for the quick actions taken by our first responders who rushed to the scene.
"Chesapeake is a tight-knit community and we are all shaken by this news. Together, we will support each other throughout this time," the mayor added."Please keep us in your prayers.”The unnamed assailant in the shooting was found dead at the store, although how they died is yet to be confirmed. Kosinski said that he did not believe attending police officers had fired any shots and could not confirm if any of the victims were Walmart employees.
Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin posted a message of support on Twitter."Our hearts break with the community of Chesapeake this morning. I remain in contact with law enforcement officials throughout this morning and have made available any resources as this investigation moves forward. Heinous acts of violence have no place in our communities," Youngkin said., a gay bar in Colorado Springs, killing five and leaving at least 18 people injured before being taken down by two patrons.
