When the pandemic hit, athletes were just like us and we were like them—human and trying to figure out how to navigate unprecedented times

Conversations about the intersection between mental health and sport have come out of the proverbial shadows. The evolution is long overdue.

Over the past few years, athletes from various sports have courageously shared their personal experiences in regard to mental health, and a consistent theme has been the demand that we see them as people first, no longer reducing their identity to one that lives exclusively in their performances or sport. Yes, they have extraordinary gifts and abilities, but that doesn’t diminish their humanity and desire to be seen in the fullness of who they are as people.
