Avatar: The Last Airbender star Kiawentiio Tarbell compared to the animated show's concept art proves she is the perfect live-action Katara. A major character in the Nickelodeon animated series, Katara is a waterbender who often acts as the voice of reason within the Avatar gang. The character will return to the screen in Netflix's upcoming live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series, played by Tarbell.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In a post shared by Avatar News, a photo of Tarbell is compared to the concept art from Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender. The concept art comes from Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Art of the Animated Series, an art book created by Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino, who served as the series' showrunners.
The water tribes in the animated show are based on indigenous cultures, particularly Arctic indigenous people such as the Inuit. Indigenous cultures are some of the least represented groups in Hollywood, making Netflix's decision to fill Katara's role with an indigenous actor a step in the right direction for the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Other prominent characters that have been cast include Aang , Zuko , Sokka , and Azula . In addition to accurately embodying their animated counterparts, a few of the actors have gone a step further to prove they truly understand their characters, particularly Cormier, who has channeled Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender by meditating publicly.
