Less than 24 hours after winning Tuesday’s election, Portage Mayor-elect Austin Bonta was already working on his transition to power.
Bonta said outgoing Democrat Mayor Sue Lynch, whom Bonta defeated Tuesday, is working with him for a smooth transition as Bonta sets up his administration. Bonta, a Republican, plans to announce his transition team soon. Once he selects the city attorney, he plans to build the rest of his leadership team. Everyone who has an appointed position can reapply, although others will be considered as well. “At no point did we bring politics into the hiring process,” he said.
The standing-room-only mayoral debate at Woodland Park last month is evidence of that, he said. “We have a lot of people in Portage who have a lot to say about Portage,” so Bonta expects a lot of input into the city’s new master plan to make sure it’s well done. On Wednesday, Bonta was busy setting up meetings and hearing from well-wishers. “It’s something that I knew I’d be doing after the election if I won.” “There are so many people who truly care about the future of Portage,” he said.
