If that was not enough, Aussies are known to bare teeth when they smile; one of only a few dog breeds known to do so. Some believe they originated in the United States, where they were bred to work on ranches, but others suggest they can be traced back to the Basque region of Spain.It is theorised Basque shepherds first took their dogs with them to Australia and then to the United States, so Americans called the dogs “Australian shepherds.”

Some have two different coloured eyes, known as heterochromia. In most cases, this will make one eye colour a piercing light blue, and the other a darker colour such as brown. Three-year-old Australian shepherd, Viking, claimed the most prestigious title at Crufts 2024 in Birmingham, England, making headlines around the world.“Most of our puppies now go from word of mouth to families,” she says. “Then the families come back for a second one.”

Richardson frequently travels overseas for major dog shows and recently met Crufts champion, Viking, in Switzerland. As the breed has a relatively small gene pool, Richardson decided to import Viking’s semen to father some of her Australian shepherds.“Viking was incredible,” she says. “I just fell in love with him. He’s funny, silly and just has this amazing temperament and that’s why I decided to breed him with my girls.
