In the latest Everything Should Be Better, TristinHopper explains how this inventor freed a world beset by traffic chaos ShouldBeBetter BlackHistoryMonth

video below or read the transcript to learn how a Black inventor freed a world beset by traffic chaos.

The world’s first electric traffic lights were installed in the U.S. in 1914. The concept of a yellow traffic light was patented in 1923. So that means for nine years, all you had was stop and go lights … and a whole lot of people getting T-boned. And this is all happening in cars that look like this. The only real safety feature on a Ford Model T was that the black paint helped to hide all the blood.Until Garrett Morgan comes along: Inventor, newspaper tycoon, and one of the first Black men in the U.S. to own a car. He was also the child of former slaves.

As the story goes, Morgan witnesses a particularly gruesome accident at an intersection in Cleveland. So he has a vision of this:It’s a bit more complicated than a modern traffic light, but drivers were smarter in those days.If the arms are down and go faces your lane, go. Stop faces you, you stop. But here’s the innovative part. If all arms are up, all traffic stops and allows the intersection to clear before traffic moves again.

Later inventors would refine the concept to have fewer moving parts. But if you haven’t been T-boned today, maybe spare a moment for Garrett Morgan.
