San Diego State returned to the Associated Press top 25 after a four-week hiatus, landing at No. 23, one spot ahead of Duke. The Aztecs appeared on 52 of 60 ballots and were as high as 17Last week alone, there were 20 combined losses by 16 teams in the top 25. All but one team between 11lost at least once. Added Dutcher: “I just think they’re connected, you know? Last year’s team had a lot of talent but they probably weren’t as connected. This year’s team looks like they enjoy playing together, they enjoy being coached by Coach Alford. And they play hard. Playing hard is a skill.
Dutcher has lauded the luxury of depth all season, and most people assume he means its ability to wear down opponents with wave after wave of substitution. But the deep bench works at a different level, allowing them to move chess pieces across the hardwood board like few coaching staffs can. It sacrificed Johnson, the team’s best defender against Wyoming’s back-down isolation sets by 6-7 Hunter Maldonado. But at the other end, it spread the floor and opened driving lanes. And eight points in the crucial closing minutes, when the Aztecs finally pulled away, came on drives by Butler or Matt Bradley.“Our team is deep,” LeDee said. “They decided to ride with me, and I gave it all I got.
